When we bought our house there was no kitchen. So we bought an Ikea kitchen which fell apart in two years. Like it is peeling, has black mold in spots, rust everywhere. It's disgusting and I saved and saved and saved and after 12 gross years I am finally redoing my kitchen with a proper Italian brand. It wasn't just ugly, it was a health hazard.
I suggest COMFORTABLE stools with backs, and ideally, arm wrests. Light color.
Also, a pretty light yellow for the walls.
Lastly, move everything off the counters. Especially appliances. Except for the container of utensils. Create a sub space for them. Get a small table, near an outlet. Regardless of how it looks. I lived in a house where I moved the fridge to the mud room off the kitchen. And put a cart in the space and open shelves. That is a lot of space. Maybe the small appliances could go there, freeing the space near the sink. Just think out of the box on this, practical first, and not about looks. Adding an outlet, paint, shelves on the walls, and bar stools are a small cost. Old style buffets or china cabinets are cheap used, and would fit in this look.

ooof that is a big undertaking but i hope it goes well!
I will be the first to sledgehammer the Ikea kitchen.
Also, small round under cabinet lights are inexpensive though they do permanently take up a plug.
